The Bureau of Special Folks is the elite crime fighting force in all of Dimension 25. The brave men and women who comprise the illustrious roster of this legendary organization rank among some of the most heroic and capable in all the land.

Mission Statement

At its core, the BSF are tasked with any monumental threat to the city of Skanko, whether that come from within Dimension 25 or without. Whether battling the Criminal Underworld of Skanko’s seedy, shadow-laden streets or stemming the tide of an interdimensional invasion, the BSF specialize in odd and fantastic cases that baffle common law enforcement. At its core, however, the BSF focus the majority of their attention on Dimensional phenomena.

Founding

The Bureau was founded immediately following the Great Goblin War, and was birthed as a direct counter-measure to any other Dimensional threat that might decide to casually stomp their way into Dimension 25. About 30 years ago, an army of Goblin Commandos from Dimension 77 invaded Skanko and occupied a full Province of the city, sparking off a brutal war that lasted 5 years and cost many lives. After the great green tide was battered back to their home Dimension and the costly war was won, the BSF was founded in the hopes to prevent such a bloody conflict from ever occurring again.

Mascot

The noble Mascot of the BSF is the legendary (and now extinct) Klofak, a truly odd bird-creature with a pink horn, bat wings, and octopus tentacles for a tail that can shoot laser beams out of its eyeballs. During the final battle of the Great Goblin War, the Mayor of Skanko at the time (Brodin Hanklebee) rode his pet Klofak valiantly into battle and personally led the assault against the green menace, sacrificing himself and the last Klofak to bring peace to his city by pushing back the Goblin battalions back to their dreaded home Dimension.

In honor of its noble sacrifice, the BSF chose the Klofak to be its mascot, and the mythical bird is proudly emblazoned on the badge-crest of the Bureau.

Branches

The BSF is a massive organization comprised of 3 distinct Branches that are each tasked with their own particular duties and responsibilities.

The Bureaucratic Branch handles the boring, day to day aspects of life, comprised of typists, secretaries, and payroll departments. You know, the drab nine-to-five stuff that nobody likes to do. While their job isn’t the most exciting thing in the world, this branch is by far the largest, and is vital to the smooth operations of the BSF.

The Research and Development Branch are the technological wing of the BSF, tasked with designing and constructing the weapons and devices that the BSF make use of in their investigations. Filled with ingenious eggheads and creative brainiacs, R&D keep the Field Agents they outfit with gear one step ahead of those that would do Dimension 25 harm.

The Investigatory Branch is the most famed of the branches, comprised of BSF Field Agents who brave the streets of Skanko, solving cases and clashing with impossible dangers on a regular basis. Only members of the Investigatory Branch are required to go through the grueling BSF Academy, and when one thinks of a member of the BSF, they instinctively think of the brave Field Agents of this Branch.

In case it needs to be said, Player Characters in Dimension 25 are members of the Investigatory Branch. While the Bureaucratic and R&D Branches are certainly vital parts of the BSF, they aren’t particularly action-packed careers.

Higher Learning

Those who think they have what it takes to wear the badge of a BSF Field Agent must enroll in the BSF Academy and endure a gruesome Basic Training regimen that weeds out the unworthy. About 95% of those who sign up to test their mettle at the Academy find out that they simply cannot cut the steep physical and mental requirements to join such a hallowed fraternity like the Bureau.

Those who manage to stick with it and actually earn admittance into the Academy after the 6-week Basic Training course spend the next d3 years studying up on all manner of topics, from Firearm training to Inter-Dimensional studies. The rare few who graduate from the BSF Academy find themselves prepared to take on an array of challenges and situations.

Students still attending the BSF Academy are known as Squibs. This is less a rank, and more a slur to denote inexperience. Once a lowly Squib graduates from Academy, they earn the rank of Cadet.

Front Lines

Cadets report to the BSF Headquarters in Midtown Skanko and are assigned to an experienced Agent, who shows the Rookie the ropes and acts as a mentor (some would say ‘Babysitter’) to the newly minted Cadet. During this time, Cadets accompany Agents on their cases and assist however they can to prove their worth. After showcasing their skill, determination and bravery, a Cadet earns the hallowed rank of BSF Agent

Agents often times work in pairs or even small groups of 3 to 5, depending on their caseload they are tasked with solving. Some Agents prefer to work alone.

The vast majority of Field Agents in the BSF are of Agent rank, but those who exemplify the core beliefs of the BSF and are singularly talented are granted the uber-rare title of Special Agent. Special Agents are truly legendary figures among the BSF, and have proven themselves against truly superior odds and have braved tremendous dangers. As you might expect, Special Agents are few and far between.

The Brass

At the tippy-top of the BSF sits the Director, who holds office at the BSF Headquarters and personally directs the organization’s goals and aims. The Director of the BSF is currently a straight-shooting Gurf named Yobel Moggins. Director Moggins isn’t the most tactful fellow, but beneath his grumpy exterior lies a true heart of gold, and he cares deeply for the guys and dolls behind the BSF Badge. Director Moggins was a Special Agent for 10 years before being unanimously voted as Director.

The Director of the BSF personally attends and speaks at the graduation ceremonies of all Academy Cadets.
